How We Analyze Expedition Reviews
Our methodology is designed to produce findings that are reproducible, honest about limitations, and useful to travelers making high-stakes booking decisions. Here is exactly how we work.
1. Source Selection Criteria
We only use sources where reviews are tied to verified purchases or identifiable travel experiences:
- Trustpilot — verified purchase platform, minimum threshold of 50 reviews required
- TripAdvisor — trip-specific reviews from traceable travelers
- Google Maps — public reviews from Google account holders
- Reddit r/AntarcticaTravel — community forum; weight given to detailed first-person accounts and posts from verified industry professionals
We do not use anonymous forums, aggregator sites without verified purchase flags, or operator-provided testimonials.
2. Aspect Classification System
We identify seven aspects that consistently appear as distinct categories in polar expedition reviews:
- Expedition Team & Guides
- Wildlife & Shore Landings
- Ship & Cabin Comfort
- Food & Onboard Experience
- Value for Money
- Booking & Pre-Voyage Service
- Wi-Fi & Connectivity
Each review is classified by the primary aspect it addresses. Scores reflect the proportion of positive vs. negative signals on that aspect across all sources. A 4.9 score means near-universal positive signal; a 3.8 means mixed, with documented negatives outweighing positives in some sub-dimensions.
3. Editorial Assessment vs. Aggregated Quote
Each aspect section contains two distinct types of content:
- Editorial assessment — our synthesis of the pattern across all reviewed sources. This is explicitly labeled as editorial summary, not a direct quote.
- Verified reviewer quotes — verbatim excerpts from source platforms, attributed to the original reviewer with source badge and date.
Editorial assessment is written to reflect what the evidence shows, not what we believe. Where evidence is mixed, we say so. Where evidence is strong, we say so.
4. Negative Review Inclusion Policy
All documented negative patterns are included, regardless of severity. We do not suppress or minimize critical findings. Travelers spending $6,000–$12,000+ on an expedition deserve to see the documented failures alongside the documented strengths.
Where an operator has publicly responded to a negative review and described corrective action, we note this — but the original finding remains in the record.
5. Update Frequency and Conflict of Interest Policy
Content is reviewed when new review patterns emerge and at minimum annually. The current version reflects data through May 2026.
